Jon Jones began wrestling in his early life and was a state champion high school wrestler. He also wrestling at Iowa Central Community College, grappling a national JUCO title. He would make his MMA debut in 2008.
Jones tore through his first five fights outside of the UFC, and eventually entered the UFC after taking a fight on 2 weeks notice. Although being a heavy underdog in both his first two fights, which consisted of 2 decision wins versus Andre Gusmao and Stephan Bonnar. After gaining some notoriety, he was slated to face Jake O'Brien and finished him with a guillotine choke after dominating the fight.
And although he is unofficially undefeated, his only 'loss' came versus Matt Hamill after Hamill received multiple '12 to 6' (motion going from up to down) elbows. He originally lost one point but since Hamill could not continue the fight he was DQ'd.
Jones then rebounded against Brandon Vera, where he landed a brutal elbow which broke Vera's face in 3 separate locations. He then went on to dominate Vladimir Matyushenko and Ryan Bader, and was slated to face [then] Light-Heavyweight Champion Mauricio Rua. Jon Jones absolutely dominated Shogun, ending the fight in the 3rd round with a hard body blow.
